Should You do an Engagement Session?

While you've been searching for a wedding photographer, the Engagement Session is one of those things you're probably not quite sure about. What actually is it? Is it going to be awkward? Is it even worth it, or is it just another thing to add to an already overwhelming list of stuff to sort before your wedding?

We've been in the weddings game for over a decade and we think Engagement Sessions are massively underrated. Here’s 3 reasons why we think they're a must…

1 — We’ll get to know each other

As your photographers, we're going to be the only people at your wedding who'll be by your side from the moment you start getting ready to the moment you walk out the door at the end of the night. So it makes sense for the four of us to hang out, grab some photos and get to know each other before your wedding day comes around.

When we walk in the door on your wedding day, you'll know us like friends. No awkward silences or weirdness, just hugs, chats and total trust.

You'll also notice that because you're completely relaxed having us around, your family and friends will immediately drop their guards and bring us into their circle as well. That changes everything.

2 — You’ll get comfortbale around our cameras

We get it, the thought of having your photo taken isn't always easy. Almost all of our couples (in fact, it might literally be all of them) told us before we met them that they were "bad at photos".

The truth is, it's not really you that's bad at photos, it's the person holding the camera. And unlike every other occasion where someone's had a phone shoved in your face, we actually know how to let you just be yourselves.

You'll look natural because we'll help you feel natural. You'll look fun and relaxed because you actually are having fun and you actually are relaxed. Posing? We wouldn't even feel comfortable being posed and moulded ourselves, so we're not going to put that on you and expect a different result.

An Engagement Session with us is a low-stakes, zero-pressure environment with no timeline, no one watching and no need for perfection. It will completely lift the fog on this limiting belief that you're “bad at photos”. Now, imagine what that will do for you on your wedding day…

3 — Dont have any good Photos together? Now you DO!

Let’s acknowledge reality here (some of this applies to us too)…

Your camera roll, as far the two of you as a couple goes, is mostly full of your thousands of attempts at taking a good selfie, one of you taking random, mostly unusable photos of the other, and a couple of half-decent but totally boring portraits taken by a friend at an event in crappy light.

An Engagement Session fixes all of this.

These will easily be the best photos you've ever had of yourselves together. And there's something genuinely surreal about looking at a set of photos and thinking “Holy crap, that's actually us!”

4 — (bonus) Use them for your save the dates

Our couples do this all the time. They're so happy with their Engagement photos, they can't not use them for their Save The Dates. And they’re Save The Dates end up looking infinitely better than a generic photo bundled with some clip art and a random font in Canva.

You can also use them for your invitations or create a guest signing album for your reception. Heaps of possibilities.

So, should you do an Engagement Session? We think they're awesome, but they're also not for everyone. In the end, it's totally up to you.

But here's some food for thought: well over 80% of our couples over the last 10 years chose to have an Engagement Session with us. Every single one of them was glad they did, and they always tell us afterwards how much of a difference it made to how they felt on their wedding day.
